Hi there,
I was updating a friends computer and was installing a service pack from the Microsoft website. The computer was running windows 2000.
Upon installing the service pack and restarting I ran into a problem. The computer starts to boot up but will not complete the startup [only to restart once again]. This continues on indefinitely.
I tried starting up in safe mode with the same result and also with the last known good configuration (which seems to be the one it is now using) still with the same result i.e. the computer continues to restart and not fully reboot.
Do you happen to have any ideas or suggestions?
Thank you in advance.
Sincerely,
Ronan

That is always fun. Right after the computer starts and right before windows loads press f8 every few seconds. It should give you an option to get into safe mode. Then check your add remove programs for anything like 1800search or myweb search or anything that might be spyware related. If you have spybot installed run it from there. I am not sure if you can install spybot from safe mode but you can try. Often spyware will cause all kinds of instability especially when you try updating the system. You should also be able t remove the recent service packs from add remove programs aswell. Try the spyware removal first.
Thank you for your suggestion, unfortunatly though i cannot boot the system up in safe mode as it keeps restarting. Looks like i might have to to a reinstall.
Sincerely,
Ronan
Answer: That didn't work huh? Try booting off of the Windows 2000 CD. When it says press a key to boot from CD, Press any key. Then it should give you a menu asking whether to repair or install. Choose new install. I know that sounds counter intuitive but trust me on this one. The repair option is pretty useless. Then it should find an existing install of windows and it should give you a repair option a second time. This time hit R for repair. That will reload the basic 2000 files and may fix your problem. |
