The phone company recently called my daughter and told her that a system problem with DSL was traced back to her computer and gave her 48 hours to correct the problem else the DSL would be disconnected. I took her pc and found a scad of trojans and viruses. After about 2 days of getting rid of it all, and using hijack this, adaware, spybot and installing avg antivirus it seemed to run perfectly at my house on my DSL modem. Now that she's gotten it back she can click on Internet icon and it brings up her home page which is Yahoo. If she tries to do a web search it comes up with this page cannot be displayed. Clicking on any of Yahoo's icons such as mail or finace and such brings up the same page. She can click on the shortcut to our newpaper back home in Ga and the page will come up but if she clicks on a headline to read an article once again it won't show. I loaded all the Windows updates that she had failed to run as well as Service Pack2. Could it be something to do with her modem? Possibly a hacker still having access to that IP number? I am at a loos here as I am only a "shade tree" pc worker anyway. Any help would be appreciated. Thnx in advance!!

Check to see if she has a static DNS assignment. You may have gotten all the viurses and spyware out but not fixed their payload. Also check the hosts file to see if there are any entries. Spybot will but some in there when you immunize so don't worry if you see strange domain names but yahoo shouldn't be there etc. The hosts file is in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc. Also try running spybot and ad aware in safe mode. Some bugs will hide regenerative scripts that can reinstall the spyware. Running in safe mode seems to disable these.
Preicate it!!! Going out there today and will give that a try!! Thnx for all the help and have Great New Year!! |
