Question: I sometimes I feel like i wasted my time doing a degree, I keep getting helpdesk offered but studied for more business analysis role, but anyway to pay off debt beggars can't be choosers, would like someone to give me the ups and downs of this job please? Brief answer will do.

•Maintenance and support of PC's, WinTerms and printers.
-Ensure ongoing operation of all desktop and laptop PC's and printers, meeting user expectations.
-Respond promptly to all calls allocated from the IT Helpdesk.
•Monitor and review performance of PC's, WinTerms and printers
•Carry out repairs & maintenance as required & schedule visits of other resources (eg Vendors) where necessary.
•Make recommendations for new equipment acquisitions. 1
•Helpdesk phone calls
-Work as part of IT Helpdesk answering incoming Helpdesk calls
•Quickly and efficiently attend to incoming calls
-Log all calls in Helpdesk call tracking system 2
-PC and LAN system software and hardware installations
-Ensure correct and effective installation of new hardware, software and network facilities, meeting user expectations.
-Carry out all installations in accordance with Company standards and procedures , especially change control.
•Execute tests to confirm operations and network compatibility.
•Monitor and review performance.
•Network Support
-Ensure ongoing operation of network.

•Log the call with appropriate third party supplier and follow up when needed 4
•Backup and Disaster Recovery.
To maximise our ability to recover from problems and thereby ensure continuity of service.
•Implement Company standards & procedures.
•Ensure daily backups performed
•Ensure off-site media storage actioned on a regular basis.
•Assist in facilities audit.
•Security
Maintain a secure network protecting all information, while allowing access to all legitimate users. • Perform all adds, moves and changes according to Company standards & procedures.
•Liaise with User management and third party suppliers
•Abide by Company IT policies
•User support & training.
To provide on site support & assist in user training, where possible, in order to maximise user satisfaction and productivity.•Respond promptly to all calls allocated from the IT Helpdesk.
•Carry out on site problem diagnosis and resolution.
•Provide advice & assistance to users with the development of applications where possible.
•Advise users on productivity tips.
Answer: The question you have to ask yourself is what position are you trying to get to? The computer industry has not yet recovered from the dot com die off. You can still make good money if you have experience and references etc. To get started you will have to take a grunt level job. I had the exact opposite problem. I was self taught and had tons of experience but no degree. Really you need both to succeed these days. If you are trying to become a network admin you should probably look at the PC tech route. Helpdesk is ok so long as you don't spend all day on the phone. If you physically take a part the computers and do on site trouble shooting you will learn more. Any entry level tech job will be looking more for someone who has good customer service skills and follow up than a strong tech. They will also likely pay you crap for the first couple of years. I just got done with my degree too from Devry. I went back to night school after having been in the industry for 7 years. I learned far more in my first year on the job than I ever did in the many years in school. School of hard knocks is the best teacher out there. |
