Question: First of all, thanks for your prompt reply.
I was stuck with other problems.
1) I did what you told me, but only the desktop shortcuts was ok ( the wallpaper is not copied because it's from some other jpeg file?. I can't even start outlook when I log in as the domain user ( error openning outlook ). When I copy the files in the profile folder I unhide all hidden files and copied those too.
2) When setting the TCP/IP for the machine, I changed the DNS server IP to 192.168.1.8 which is my 2003 server with DNS server started ( I used to type in the 2 IP address of the DNS server of my ISP.
3) The DHCP server stopped working ( I don't think it's related to this though ). It used to worked fine with the scope 192.168.1.20 to 192.168.1.254 and I have authorised it already. When I stop or restart the DHCP server, it gives me an error of server not present on this pc and connection problem etc. When I check the auto IP box on the client pc, it got an IP address not in my scope and with restricted ability connection.
Any clues?

Question -
I am now moving the users from workgroup to a domain ( XP clients and 2003 server ). After I set up the server and created new user accounts, how do I save the original users' settings like destop and outlook accounts and emails etc. then import it into the new user accounts within the domain.
Thanks in advance!
Answer -
I just got done doing this exact same type of migration last week. First if you users are using Outlook Express they will have to convert to Outlook 2000 or better. For some reason you can't move the outlook express files. Second if you have pop3 accounts you will need the passwords because you will loose them after the migration. The rest of the settings and the emails, contacts and calendar items will be there but the pop3 passwords get cleared. Then login as the local admin and join the domain, make sure that the machines DNS server entry is pointing to the Window server. After you reboot login as the domain Admin, not the user you who's settings you want to keep and rename their profile something.old. Then login as the user . Then login as admin again and copy the contents of something.old to the profile directory that was just created. Make sure you reset the permissions on all the subfolders of that profile to give the domain user access. Remember the domain user is NOT the same user as the old local account even if they have the same name and password. That is why you have to redo the permissions etc.
Answer: 1. It is probably a permissions issue. Something didn't get reset. Try it again.
3. If you got an IP that started with 169.x.x.x then that means it got no IP address. If you got some other # then there is another DHCP server somewhere on your network. That would be why your DHCP server won't start. Microsoft DHCP won't start if it sees another DHCP. |
