Question: Andrew,
I installed 2000 Server on a PC I'm using just for testing and learning. I already have a home network with 4 Windows 2000 stations. Keep in mind, thats a workgroup and as of now has nothing to do with this test PC with Server on it.
I want to be able to use Active Directory. I installed Server, then ran DCPROMO during which I chose options: Domain controller for a new domain - Create a new domain tree - Create new forest of domain trees, just like the book says.
After following the steps in the MCSE book, near the very end I got the error: "ACTIVE DIRECTORY INSTALLATION FAILED, The network location cannot be reached."
What network location? All I'm trying to do is start a domain and if possible, connect it to my existing home network and administer those 4 stations I have. Thanks in advance.
Answer: Windows 200x needs to talk to itself. "Itself" is very important in w2kx. It needs to connect to itself, it will replicate to itself. I would have to say that it is full of itself just like M$. LOL! Sorry couldn't resist that. Anyway, make sure that the DNS server that you choose in "local area connection" is pointing to itself (127.0.0.1). Let the dcpromo wizard create the DNS server settings etc. If it can't resolve itself through DNS then connections will fail. |
