|
Question: Hi Andrew,
at our workplace we have only 8 computers working in a small windows network configured in a WORKGROUP. this has been working well so far, but now we are about to add a couple more machines and its getting painful to have to setup usernames etc all over the place for each computer. I was wondering is there any way without creating a domain to have one userlist on the workgroup to setup and administer users etc?
basicaaly we are looking for any easier way to be able to setup shares and groups etc to say who can access what shares.
In my previous job we had a domain where the IT guy would setup users and access etc and it seemed easier than what we are doing. We have no server software, all machines are running XP PRO
Thanks for any help.

Answer: A domain definately makes administration much easier. I can't really think of a way to add users centrally without one though. If you want to avoid hte expense of buying Windows 2003 server and still have a domain you could get a linux server. Redhat and others can mimic a domain controller using Samba. It has it's limitations but it might be nice for what you need it for |
