Question: -------------------------
Followup To
Question -
I have computer #1 and #2 on a wireless (Hawking) router with a cable connection.
connection 2, connected, shared, firewalled.
getting \\bob (i.e. #2) is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource, etc.
I have, to the best of my knowledge, as I set up both computers, Administrator status.
I do not log on, just let it all start up with the Welcome screen.
There are several folders on #2 that are set "to share this folder with both network users
and other users of this computer (#2). Share and allow users to change my files are both
checked. The folders also have the little hand under them.
I have tried taking off all firewalls to no avail.
In My Computer=>Tools=>Folder Options=>View: Automatically search for network folders and
printers is checked.
I can ping both computers.
Net View lists both computers from each machine.
Net Use gives New connections will be remembered. There are no entries in the list. At
one time, Net Use gave: From #2 it showed #1 using Microsoft Windows Network. #1 said
the same then as now. That is not the case now with #2. I don't know why.
on #1.
If I try to enable sharing on the 1394 connection on #1, I cannot access the internet from #1, #2 works.

This is a long question. I think it will be easier if we divide it into smaller parts. As far as access to the shares, go to control panel on both computers then users. Make sure that they have the same username and password. In order for sharing to work right they need to have a common username between the two. Login as the common user on each machine and see if it will let you access the shares.
Both computers have a user with the same name and password and administrator status. The same problem exists. #2 (XP HOME)
can access #1 (XP MEDIA CENTRE 2005) but #1 cannot access #2. They both can see each other as workgroups but #1 cannot
access #2 getting the 'no permission' response. Access denied.
I have gone into safe mode on #2 to set permissions and security (the only way is in Safe Mode on XP HOME) and have set it
so that 'Everyone' has access and full control and set security so all users have full control. It appears that XP HOME
will only allow users on that computer to have access. EG.: Bob is the network name of computer #2. Security lists
Bob\Administrator (or something like that, I forget exactly) has full access to files on #2. Gateway is the network name
of #1. There is no way to get it to accept Gateway\Administrator. It just rejects it. That seems to be the problem.
XP HOME rejects any access from XP Media Centre (which I believe is a form of XP PRO).
It has been two weeks now, 5 hours a day and still I cannot figure it out. My last resort maybe, and I don't know if it
would work and I am not knowledgeable about it, is to try to edit the registry on XP HOME if it has an area where
permissions are stored. Bet I'd have to re-install Windows if I tried that though. Maybe my next step should be to call
in the Geek Squad. That might be cost prohibitive though if it takes him as long as it has taken me. Trying to keep a
sense of humour.

Answer: Man that sounds like a head ache. It sounds like you have set everything up correctly. In a work group enviroment you will not be able and should not have to include the machinename like gateway\administrator. Simply adding administrator should do it. I found this site that might be helpful: rel="nofollow"www.wown.com/j_helmig/wxpnetsh.htm. I really don't know why it wouldn't work by the way you described it. I work almost exclusively with XP Pro but when I am unfortunate enough to work with XP home I always regret it. Microsoft goes out of it's way to make people want to spend the extra bread on XP Pro. Good luck |
