Question: Hi,
We have a small network of under 25 connections and currently still run NT4.0. Sometime in the next couple of years we're going to want to upgrade our accounting package, which will probably require Windows 2000 or 2003 Server. So I figure we'll go with the more recent 2003. However, beyond that, I wonder which edition we should consider. Among them are Small Business Server, Enterprise Edition, Standard Edition, Exchange Server. And sometimes I see reference to Retail version--as opposed to OEM I guess. Your recommendation and why please--assuming I've provided enough info. Oh, another point--we don't administer our own e-mail. We have a website and e-mail comes into an Outlook Express account I have set up to receive it. Then I simply forward appropriate mail to various hotmail accounts our 3-4 individuals who need it have set up.

Answer: It sounds like you would want standard edition. Small business give you Exchange which is an email server for free but they limit you to 50 users or so. Not that the # of users is a problem now but why have the restriction if you don't want exchange. The next version up is advanced server which you would only need it you want to do clustering or have more that 4 processors in one system. |
