Question: I also read something about cisco pix causing networking problems, but that's not it because we don't have any cisco at all in this whole environment at this time. Also, it's a local thing, both machines are sitting next to each other on my desk and are connected on the same segment without any routing gear between them.
I've tried removing the workstation from the domain and re-adding it. no difference. Also the allow non-secure updates doesn't seem to make a difference either.

At the same time, an event id error occurs in XP (although it occurs intermittently, not every time the dns fails to register. It's as follows:

The reason the system could not register these RRs was because the DNS server contacted refused the update request. The reasons for this might be (a) you are not allowed to update the specified DNS domain name, or (b) because the DNS server authoritative for this name does not support the DNS dynamic update protocol.
To register the DNS host (A) resource records using the specific DNS domain name and IP addresses for this adapter, contact your DNS server or network systems administrator.
The ipconfig/registerdns message also appears as:
"Registration of DNS records failed: Access is denied."
I don't know why it gives this message sometimes and other times it says:
"Registration of the DNS resource records for all adapters of this computer has been initiated. Any errors will be reported in the Event Viewer in 15 minutes.."
Unfortunately the firewall being off made no difference. Thanks for the reply. This is a hard one.

Question -
I've got a test 2003 server domain controller which has DNS Active Directory Integrated zones. My test client (XP) can't register in DNS even though I've set the Active Directory zones (both forward and reverse) to accept Secure updates.
The XP client is part of this test domain and authenticates and logs on fine with different users. Network connectivity between the two is good. I even allowed insecure updates but they still don't work. The ip is static.
When I type ipconfig/registerdns I get:
Registration of the DNS resource records for all adapters of this computer has been initiated. Any errors will be reported in the Event Viewer in 15 minutes..
I check the event viewer but even after 30 minutes there's nothing and the record hasn't been added to the M$ DNS server.
Any ideas?

My first thought would be to make sure that the 2003 server has the latest patches but I am guessing you have already done that. The other thought is that maybe XP firewall is some how blocking the DNS conversation? Try disabling it temporarily just to see. I have also seen issues like this where is magically fixes it self over night. Try the firewall and let me know how that works and meanwhile I will try to think of something else to try.

I had an interesting thought today about this issue. I ran into a Windows DNS issue where I couldn't get to symantec.com or ebay.com. If your machines are over a WAN link with a PIX this could be it. Or maybe even Cisco switches do this by default too.
Answer: You can try moving the workstations to another segment to confirm that it is the place on the switch that is doing it. At least that would help isolate this issue. If the mahcine does work elsewhere then the switch might just be going bad and randomly dropping packets. |
