Question: I've currently got the problem that I can't set up the trust relationship. I've got the new 2003 server on the same subnet as the old domain, but it can't see the other domain and the other domain can't see it's domain.

The networking seems fine because the computers can all ping each other by hostnames as well as ip addesses. I also can't map a drive using the windows 2003 computer to access my workstation, but i can ping the workstation by name and ip address. I've even mapped drives using the workststion to access the 2003 server, but I can't do it the other way around! I've disabled the firewall completely to eliminate that as a problem. no luck.

I've read so many pages from microsoft and others for the last 5 hours my head is spinning. I'm getting really frustrated.

Any idea how come I've got this weird network issue?
Answer: I assume the domain and server names are all unique right? Check the server service on the workstation. You should be able to map a drive to it unless that service is stopped. I had a virus a client that kept trashing that service. Norton wouldn't detect it either. Sophos finally caught it. You might also want to have each domain controller be a secondary DNS for the other domain. Let me know if any of that helps.
