Question: hi Andrew! Here's my problem:I have 2 comps(one with a internet connection thru a CATV modem, and the second without)+a Asus Gigax 1005 5/8 port switch! How do I 'ip route' this 2 comps so that i can have internet (and if possible network)on both? Here are the settings:
On first comp:
ip:81.196.99.11
submask:255.255.255.128
gateway:81.196.99.1
dns:62.231.97.91
(all are provided by the net provider)
I have also set up a extern ip(from the Advanced tab in tcp/ip settings : 192.168.0.1 (I'm using XP+sp2))
pls tell me what should I set up in my second comp(ip,gate,dns,etc...)(without buying a hardware router)?
PS:the connections:
-the cable from the modem goes into the sw
-from the sw: the 2 cables witch go into the 2 computers.Thx
Answer: You can use internet connection sharing with XP but you will need 2 network cards in the XP machine. The cable modem goes into one nic and the other nic plugs into the switch. Then the other computer plugs into the switch. The XP machine with the 2 nics will need to be on for the other computer to get to the internet.
