|
Question: I am a user of a small bussiness network LAN. Our problem is that sometimes intermittently, users can't see the other users, but perhaps only one or two other computers at the most, then all of a sudden all computers and their shared resources are avaliable as they sould.
We use automatic IP assignment from a ADSL modem/hub that connects to the other hubs as well, for a total of 32 computers. Almost all computer's operating system is Windows XP Pro, and our print server is Linux based. Our ADSL is a fixed IP address at 1Mb speed and the Internet response is pretty good, and this service never gets interrupted even when the other computers are not "visible"
I can access any computer regradless of wether I can see it if I use the command line and scribble it's address manually, but most other users find this method too complicated. Do youhave any advice to give us?
Answer: This is refered to as a browser error. The browser service is getting messed up. It is extremely common. Microsoft's browser service is fundamentally broken. If you have a windows server you can try setting up WINS. WINS will take the peer to peer browser process and centralize it. WINS works great. |
