Hi M.Lencioni,
Client:
Small Business with only 4 employees (workstations) and 10 air conditioning repair technicians on the road who doesn't access the local network (at lease for now).
They want me to install a local network based on Windows SBS 2003 with Exchange 2003. They also want to access the network from home or any remote place with VPN. So far I have no problems with that.
My problem is:
They want to do daily backup but doesn't want to have to change data cartridge and have to send them out or have an employee to go home with them. So, they want me to setup a backup job that will backup on the president PC at is home. They say that one of there friend who also have a small business are setup like that.
Do you have an idea on how to do this? It as to be done using the Internet? Do the PC at home as to be configure on the domain?
I'm use to setup backup job using Veritas Backup Exec or Arcerve or native windows backup. But it is done locally not on a remote machine.
Can you help me with that one?
Is there any security issue that I should know of (I'm sure there is).
Using ISA 2003 (come with SBS 2003) is enough secure for VPN and what they want to do with their backup job?
I thank you in advance!
I hope I didn't make to many errors in my English demand.

Internet connections are relatively slow. YOu would probably not be able to backup reliably this way. There is a good alternative. Check out these guys: rel="nofollow"www.datavaultcorp.com/
They use a fancy compression algorithm to backup data over the internet. They are pretty reputable.
Thanks M.Lencioni,
I am pretty sure that they will not want to pay for this service and that they will ask me to make the backups on the president personal PC at home. Do you have some things to suggest me to do it this way? I imagine that to be able to make the backups this way, the PC at the house must have a static address IP and that I must have a VPN connection or something of the kind with this PC. And, obviously, a firewall will have to be installed on the PC house. Can you give me some tricks PLEASE? It as to be done automaticly.
Thanks for the Data Vault Corporation web addressee.

Answer: You can create a pptp vpn and make a batch file that will copy the files however it will take about 1 hour per 600MB of data. Which means that if you have only 10GB of data to be backed up it will take 16 hours. Some ISP's will not allow that amount of traffic every day. As far as how to do it, The office needs a static IP. The home network does not need a static IP. Try this link for ISA details.
