Question: Hi M.Lencioni,

Client:

Small Business with only 4 employees (workstations) and 10 air conditioning repair technicians on the road who doesn't access the local network (at lease for now).

They want me to install a local network based on Windows SBS 2003 with Exchange 2003. They also want to access the network from home or any remote place with VPN. So far I have no problems with that.

My problem is:

They want to do daily backup but doesn't want to have to change data cartridge and have to send them out or have an employee to go home with them. So, they want me to setup a backup job that will backup on the president PC at is home. They say that one of there friend who also have a small business are setup like that.

Do you have an idea on how to do this? It as to be done using the Internet? Do the PC at home as to be configure on the domain?

I'm use to setup backup job using Veritas Backup Exec or Arcerve or native windows backup. But it is done locally not on a remote machine.

Can you help me with that one?

Is there any security issue that I should know of (I'm sure there is).

Using ISA 2003 (come with SBS 2003) is enough secure for VPN and what they want to do with their backup job?

I thank you in advance!

I hope I didn't make to many errors in my English demand.

Nicolas Roy

Answer: Internet connections are relatively slow. YOu would probably not be able to backup reliably this way. There is a good alternative. Check out these guys: rel="nofollow"www.datavaultcorp.com/

They use a fancy compression algorithm to backup data over the internet. They are pretty reputable.
