Question: can you provide me a brief outline of functional levels (ex, domain functional level) and how they relate to distribution/security groups?
Answer: I am not familiar with the term "functional level". I found a link that explains it. rel="nofollow"www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/WindowsServ/2003/standard/proddocs/en-us/Default.asp?url=/resources/documentation/WindowsServ/2003/standard/proddocs/en-us/using_levels.asp
I think it simply referrs to version control. If you move from a Windows 2000 to 2003 Active Directory there are some new toys available. I guess you "raise the functional level" by upgrading the DC to 2003. I have heard that once you have a single 2003 domain controller all your licening must be 2003 or the CALs will be invalid. Gotta love Microsoft, no really it's in the EULA. Just kidding.
