Question: Could you provide a specific list of what your company does under a maintenance plan and how often (daily, weekly, bi-weekly or once a month). I'm not sure if I would be getting a fair deal.

My company recently received an unsolicited proposal for a "maintenance plan" for our small network (1 windows 2000 server and 8 machines).
What is/should be covered in such a plan and what is a resonable monthly fee to pay? Is this worth doing given our small size?

Answer -
First to be fair I have a bias. I sell that same service. I do think that it is important to keep service packs up to date and ensure that backups are running. We have mostly small companies like yours. We check the virus scanners, fix minor issues as they come up etc. We also ensure that the backups work. I just had a client that has only 4 computers. Her hard drive crashed and she had no backup. I liteally had to see a 50 year old woman break down into tears and start drinking in front of me. Even small companies depend on their data. Fortunately I was able to salvage most of her data. However at a company your size it would probably only take about 4 or 5 hours a month to do maintenance. We charge around $80/hr. So if they are charging more than $500 per month you should definatly be asking why.
Answer: No, we cover the Chicagoland area only. It depends on what kind of shape the network is in now. If things are relatively stable then we would probably be out there once a month. When I do maintenance I do the following:
Resolve any minor users issues like, printing spyware etc.
check and test backups
Install service packs on the workstations and server
Ensure that the virus scan is working.
Check the server logs for problems and resolve
check disk space on the server
Update documentation.
That last one is important. When changes are made or something significant had to be done to fix the network we write what we did in our timesheet and during next maintenance cycle we take that information and sort it and store it in our documentation software so it is easy to find. That way the next tech out there can understand the enviroment quickly and thus resolve any problems faster. |
